Woolworth on 5th Featured in New York Times
Anecdote Architectural Experiences’ Woolworth's on 5th project was one of several historic civil rights landmarks recently featured in a New York Times article about the creation of a new US Civil Rights Trail. The former Woolworth's department store is currently under construction and will open in 2018 as a restaurant and live music venue. The renovation will pay homage to the site's civil rights history, which includes iconic lunch counter sit-ins that occurred on site in the 1960s.
“We are creating a welcome table that doesn’t ignore the past but salutes it and brings it into the future. We are going to serve great food and dance and invoke the strongest emotions of peace and fun.”
Recently, Anecdote’s staff had the opportunity to observe construction progress. Notable features include original terrazzo floors and metal railings, a reconstructed lunch counter, and a previously concealed first floor mezzanine that was uncovered and restored during construction.
